Since its launch in 1994, the Lange 1 has been one of the firm’s most coveted models. Revered for their classical Saxon watchmaking with a distinct modern twang, the asymmetric dial design embodies the perfect proportions of the golden triangle that is celebrated among collectors.
Among the Lange 1 family, the larger Grand Lange 1 has been a crowd pleaser since its conception in 2003. Initially produced as a response to the growing interest for bigger watches, the evolution of the Grand Lange 1 can be detailed in three series:
First series (2003-2012): Apparent overlapped subdials; 41.9mm case with a thickness of 11mm; fitted with a cal. L901.2
Second series (2012-2019): Subdials on a tangent; 40.9mm case with a thickness of 8.8mm; fitted with a cal. L095.1
Third series (2019- Present Day): Subdials gently overlapped; 41mm case with a thickness of 8.2mm; fitted with a cal. L095.1
Faithfully following the original model’s design DNA, the present white gold wristwatch is part of the second generation and is immediately identifiable thanks to its smaller case size and playful dial display with an hours and minutes register on the left that barely overlaps with the sweeping seconds at 5 o’clock. The optical aberration on this delicious black dial is heavily reliant on the mathematics of the golden ratio, which creates a beautifully balanced configuration, designed to draw you in. Beautiful both inside and out, the transparent sapphire caseback invites the wearer to admire the thin calibre L095.1, beautifully executed to the highest standards.
Commended by its collectability, the present A. Lange & Söhne ref. 117.028 is offered in excellent overall condition. The stolidly Germanic, dark and handsome timepiece is bound to be a brilliant addition to any.
