Paying homage to the “Orange Boy”, one of the most collectable Heuer racing chronographs, the TAG Heuer Autavia Caliber Heuer 02 for HODINKEE was released in 2018. The collaboration between the two powerhouses resulted in an exciting sports watch with aesthetics adhered to the vibrant designs and auto-inspired dial combinations from the early 70s.
The present timepiece mirrors many of the distinctive characteristics that set the inspired and the original rare bird apart from other Heuer chronographs. For instance, the Hodinkee edition shares an orange theme with a second hand, accented indexes and “racing stripes” on the chronograph minute subdial, all in the same hue as its inspiration. While its predecessor is fitted with an hour (H) and minute/hour (MH) bezels, the present example houses a tachymeter bezel to calculate speed, a more fitting choice for racers of course.
With a modern twist, the Autavia Caliber Heuer 02 for HODINKEE is closed with a sapphire caseback, unlike its older sibling, inviting the beholder to admire the Heuer 02 column-wheel chronograph, a fantastic automatic chronograph movement that sets the watch in motion. The timepiece is graced with a “beads-of-rice” bracelet in honour of the Gay Frères bracelets, often seen on vintage Heuer chronographs,
While this is not a strictly numbered edition, the present wristwatch is exclusively sold in limited quantities on Hodinkee. If you missed out on the chance to acquire this rare and curious piece in 2018, do not make the same mistake a second time.
