- The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, released in 1953, is an iconic watch that has become synonymous with the brand's legacy in the field of professional dive timekeepers. The original Fifty Fathoms established Blancpain's reputation for crafting durable and reliable dive watches.
- In 1956, Blancpain introduced the Bathyscaphe model, a more civilian-oriented interpretation of the famous Fifty Fathoms. This 37mm variant was designed for daily wear and use, while still sharing the iconic design cues of the original, including the glossy dial, large luminous indices and hands, and Bakelite bezel.
- During the early 1960s, new regulations required changes to the luminous materials used on dive watches. Blancpain complied by adopting a less radioactive compound, and some dials, like the present example, featured the universal symbol for radioactivity with a "No Radiations" cross, clearly indicating the harmless nature of the luminous elements.
- Interestingly, this particular Bathyscaphe model was not sold through luxury boutiques, but rather through specialist diving brands and shops, such as "Aqua Lung," named after Jacques Cousteau's groundbreaking invention.
- The present watch is extremely well-preserved, with the original lume having aged to an attractive buttery color that consistently reacts under UV light. Accompanied by a Heritage Authentication from Blancpain's heritage department, this Bathyscaphe is confirmed to be original and authentic, making it a highly coveted collector's item.
